From your device to the boot menu

  1. 01

    Start iPXE on your device

    PC / Desktop / Laptop

Connect an Ethernet cable and restart your computer. Open its one-time boot menu using the key shown during startup; the key depends on your manufacturer.

If iPXE is already configured, choose Network / PXE boot. Otherwise, prepare a bootable iPXE USB or CD using the official boot-media guide, then choose that USB or CD in the boot menu. Writing boot media replaces the USB's contents.

Match the boot image to your BIOS/UEFI mode. A normal PXE screen needs an iPXE chainloader on the network; this website does not configure your router or DHCP server.

    Physical server

Open the local or remote console (IPMI, iDRAC or iLO). Boot an iPXE image through virtual media, USB or an existing iPXE-enabled network boot entry. Match the image to the server's firmware mode.

    Virtual machine

Attach the VM's network adapter to a network with DHCP and internet access. Open the VM console, then boot its built-in iPXE option or attach an iPXE boot ISO. Choose a build that matches the VM's BIOS/UEFI mode.

  2. 02

    Enter the iPXE shell

Press Ctrl + B when iPXE prompts you. This is the iPXE console, rather than a Linux or Windows terminal.

  3. 03

Copy and run the two commands

dhcp requests a network address. The chain command loads your selected script. Run them in order; the client needs network, DNS and HTTPS access to this site.

  4. 04

    Choose your image and start

Pick an image from the menu to continue. Allow time for the boot files to load.
